Trigen Seed, LLC was started by Robert and Judy Romig & their son Dan as a family business in 1993 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Their breeding strategy has been to combine elite Hard Spring and Hard Winter varieties and experimental lines from the northern & southern hemispheres. Testing facilities are at Foxhome, Minnesota where Friederichs Seeds’ Peter Friederichs manages operations. The HRSW operational base is now known as LCS Trigen Research Station in recognition of Bob Romig’s contribution.
Trio Research, Wichita, Kansas was founded by James Wilson in 1981 as a service company to a biotech group who wanted breeding partners who could provide outstanding wheat lines that would take on added value when unique biotech traits were added. Trio Research was transformed to a private seed company in 1989, released its first variety in 1993, and has received approval by federal seed authorities for the first synthetic hybrid wheat varieties in the United States. The HRWW operating unit is now known as LCS Trio Research Station in recognition of Jim Wilson’s contribution.
Sam Brown established Genesis Seed Research (GSR) in 1988, performing Soft Red Wheat research to develop high-yielding competitive lines. GSR is located in Battle Ground, Indiana. The Battle Ground operating unit is now known as LCS Genesis Research Station in recognition of Sam Brown’s contribution.
Bruce Bailey started BSF Ag Research in 1977, in Portland, Indiana. Since then, it has evolved into a wheat-specific breeding company by accessing unique Soft Red Winter Wheat germplasm from many sources. In 2011 the program was consolidated with the Genesis Seed Research material at nearby Battle Ground.
Northwest Grain Growers is a 1200-member grain cooperative in Walla Walla, Washington and a strategic partner to Limagrain Cereal Seeds. NWGG provide LCS with access to seed multiplication and distribution in return for exclusive new wheat varieties. Mike Klicker is Seed Manager.
Wayne McProud established Plant Breeders 1, as a small, family-owned cereal breeding company in Moscow, Idaho specializing in feed barley and winter wheat development for the Pacific Northwest.
