Hard red spring wheats deliver yield, protein and straw strength
Demand for Limagrain Cereal Seeds (LCS) wheat seed is at an all-time high in the Northern Plains. LCS varieties excelled at test sites across the region in 2017, and sales are flourishing for spring planting.
Hard red spring wheat LCS Rebel made its debut this growing season with 106 percent of average yield in 2017 North Dakota State University east trial sites and 15.6 percent protein content across the state. LCS Rebel has an exceptionally wide area of adaptation, performing well from Montana to Minnesota. The variety is also currently being considered as a new western quality check for the Wheat Quality Council.
“Farmers have been asking for dependable, higher yielding, balanced varieties. We heard them loud and clear,” explains LCS Northern Plains Sales Manager Russell Oberg. “LCS Rebel has generated a lot of excitement this year with its combination of yield and protein. I wish we could have had about twice as much seed as we did this season, but there will be plenty of Certified this fall.”
LCS Trigger has also been in heavy demand this year. Gaining a reputation as the highest yielding variety in the Northern Plains, LCS Trigger topped 2017 yield trials in both North and South Dakota. The hard red spring wheat has a very strong disease resistance package, excellent straw strength and is an iGrow recommended variety for all crop zones in South Dakota.
LCS Breakaway and LCS Prime fill out the top LCS Northern Plains spring wheats. LCS Breakaway is a solid performer with balanced yield and protein that has proven a dependable choice for a few years now, plus very good test weight. LCS Prime is a high yielding variety with excellent straw strength.
LCS has a new addition to its thriving Northern Plains portfolio coming soon — LCS Cannon. Like its predecessor LCS Rebel, the hard red spring wheat variety shows a wide adaptation, excellent yield potential and an average protein content of between 14 and 15 percent. LCS Cannon shoots even higher for standability, with best-in-class straw strength.
